This video looks at navigating around Excel using the ribbon and the other tools available.

Video transcript.

Excel 2007 has a new interface.

At the top of the excel interface you will see the Microsoft Ribbon.

The ribbon has many different tabs. Firstly you have the Home tab where you can perform your cut, copy and paste, formatting options, alignment, and you can format the cells. Next you have the insert tab. Click on the tab heading, the ribbon will change to display the items you can insert. The next tab has page layout. The page layout allows you to change the margins and theme of your spreadsheet. Now if you want to move between the different tabs, you can also use the mouse wheel. Moving the mouse wheel down will go to the right, and moving the mouse wheel up will go to the left.

Below the ribbon you have the name box. The name box is the reference of the cell that is currently active. You can see that Cell A1 is active. The column header and row header has an orange background. If I click on A2, the name box changes to A2.

We have a value in cell B2 at the moment. If we click on the value the name box shows B2.

The value in B2 is actually a formula. Just to the right of the Name box is a formula bar. The formula bar will display the formula which give the result in B2. You can see equals (=) which denotes the beginning of a formula, 300 + 56. And we have the answer there 356. At the bottom of the screen you have the worksheet tabs. The worksheet tabs are like pages within the workbook. To move between the different pages, you can click on Sheet 2, Sheet 3, and back to Sheet 1. You can add and delete as many pages as you wish.

In summary of the excel interface, at the top you have the ribbon. Allowing you to change the different tabs using insert or page layout. At the top of the excel interface you have the save, redo and undo buttons. Just below the ribbon you have the name box, displaying the cell reference of the active cell. To the right of that you have the formula bar telling you that there is a formula in the currently selected cell. At the bottom you have the different worksheet tabs available to you.
